Hazardous materials

Hazardous materials require special handling, but with our knowledge and experience they're just another good to be shipped! Handling hazardous materials has been defined by the United Nations in detail and requires special skills. There are numerous regulations and agreements concerning transportation of hazardous materials by road, rail, air, and water, including rules on packaging, securing loads, labeling and transport. But there are also rules concerning drafting the relevant shipping documents.

In many cases, individuals are not aware of goods being hazardous material. Hazardous materials include adhesives (for hatch covers!), fireworks, gasoline, heating oil, lithium-ion batteries (as found in laptops!), certain fertilizers and uninstalled airbags (potentially explosive), hospital waste (potentially infectious), radioactive materials of all kinds (such as that used in medical and technical applications), but also substances which may only be in large quantities dangerous. A truck filled with lighters or spray cans, for example, may thus be considered a hazardous materials shipment, even if it might not normally seem to be the case from the outside.
